This post is late by about two months, but here's an update on the beats lab. Because of the pandemic, we are unable to work on the beats lab in order to protect the students and staff. This year has been an incredibly crazy year for all of us, and it is unfortunate that we are unable to finish this project as planned. However, this project isn't completely over! We will continue the build in the fall hopefully. Thank you for keeping up with these blog posts and updates throughout this year! Stay safe and healthy, and we'll see you next year!

This past week, the skylights were put in! The door frames were fully painted with multiple coats, and the doors are ready to be sprayed. The sheet metal team is working hard to bend the sheet metal (even during seminar!), and Tyveck is finally fully on the exterior of the beats lab. Good work this week! After many revisions and discussions with their groups, CEA students presented their lighting ideas to Carol on Monday, February 24th! The presentations were a success and the lighting plans are on their way. Thank you, Carol! This wasn't the only exciting thing that happened these last couple weeks. The students started to go back on cite and work on the beats lab. The teams were given their tasks. From bending sheet metal to painting door frames, everyone had fun while getting their work done. The paint team is painting the doors, adding on the second and third coats this week. The sheet metal team is bending the sheet metal that will go on the exterior of the beats lab. The other teams are working around the beats lab. The walls and roof were officially raised this past MLK weekend! Thank you to Brent and Christina Freeby, Don Wallis, and everyone who came to help. On Saturday, we were able to put up all 4 of the walls and by noon on Sunday, the roof panels were put into place. From nailing (sometimes in the wrong place), applying sealant and getting it everywhere, and using the crane to place the walls in place, everyone on site worked together to put together the structure of the tiny house.
Now, the CEA students are trying to wait patiently as the drawings are being completed. Beats Lab 3.0 is on its way! Special thanks to Heidi for also coming out and taking some of these amazing pictures! (@heidihc.photos on Instagram) As DVS students began to wrap up their projects and prepare for POLs, CEA students still had work to do. From elevations, plumbing, lighting, electricity, and section plans, we revised our drawings and even redrew some of our plans to make sure our finished products had quality. Lastly, we took home materials to build our final models based on our elevations. Students carefully cut and glued materials together to have a final representation of what they've been working on for the past semester. Congrats CEA students! You did it! Even though the parklet is done, there is still work to do. While CEA students are back in class finishing up their SDU projects, CEA Honors students start to build the subfloor for TIny House 3.0.
Finally, the parklet is completed. Right before Thanksgiving break, the teams were able to finish building their cube seats and planters! The foremen celebrated and rewarded their hardworking team members with treats and high fives while the members appreciated their amazing leaders. Congratulations, everyone!
The days seem to get shorter and shorter, but CEA and CEA Honors students continue to make the most of their time putting together the parklet. The teams are about halfway done with their seats or planters.
