This week, we continued our work from the previous week, assembling the frames of the planter boxes. Next week, a couple teams will move into putting the actual plywood siding onto the planters.

After two weeks of learning how to use our tools and going over safety, we had a smooth transition into the first part of the Da Vinci Rise structure; the planter boxes that will go around the structure. We are using our new knowledge of different nailing techniques to build the planters, and we learned how to best measure and mark on the wood to aid in making the structure exact. During week 2 on the site, we continued to practice our nailing, while learning some new techniques for different situations. A few students who were designated to use the saws learned how to safely and correctly use them, while everybody was taught how to measure and mark their wood to know where to attach other wood, or to let the saw specialist know how long to cut the piece. We launched straight into safety week this first week of the semester. We covered the basics of our individual tool kits, proper hammering and drilling etiquette, and how to be safe doing it all! Over winter break, the two superintendents, (Lexi and Alessia,) along with the four foremen, (Anthony, Juan, Giovanni and Troy,) gathered for an afternoon training session on the site where they put together the personal tool kits and learned how to make sure everyone on their team is being safe. This week, our superintendents in Engineering Research and Design made progress in setting up the trailer that will act as our base of operations and equipment storage when we start construction. |
